As Real As It Gets

As Real As It Gets

The waking world
We wake up, do daily chores, check our phones, get on with the rest of the day, about things to do, places to go, plans to make, responsibilities to juggle, errands to run. While we are in it, this is what we call the familiar, unquestioned real world.

The dreams
Our dreams are not very different, in the sense that they feel just as real while they are happening. We are so immersed in them that they do not feel unreal at all, sometimes even for a few moments after waking up.

Perhaps that says something. What makes both convincing is not their permanence, but our presence within them. Reality was never in the waking world or the dream alone. It was in the one who experiences both. Something remains present and consistent in each state, not the place, not the moment, not the part we’re playing, but the one to whom all of it appears.

Maybe that is why life need not be taken too seriously. A dream feels real while we are dreaming. So does a day while we are living it. Both, in their own ways, are as real as it gets, with the observer outliving both experiences.
